Why DiversifyUrEd?

Cultural competency in schools help towards eliminating educational inequities. A culturally responsive education involving the stories of people of color, shared by people of color, are relevant and long overdue.

Schools and districts need to ensure that curricula used in classrooms are unbiased. Curriculum should not be centered on Eurocentric points of view that perpetuate stereotypes. Rather implement comprehensive curricula that captures the whole story told through multiple lenses and assessed with diverse learning styles in mind.

Syeita Rhey-Fisher started the DiversifyUrEd initiative as a way to address the need for a culturally responsive education in her community.

students need to be exposed to authentic literature told from the standpoint of marginalized people. This is so children from diverse backgrounds can see themselves reflected on the pages they read.
