Below you will find sample student work. The work was completed using books written by authors of color, purchased by this initiative. This includes work created using books by visiting authors, as well as work integrated into the curriculum throughout the year.

"Beautiful Me" Poster
Award-winning author, Crystal Senter Brown, visited Global Communications Academy, IB. Students in grades 3-5 read her poetry book, But You Have Such A Pretty Face.

This was a poster created for the poem, "Beautiful me" from that book collection of poems.

Students determined the central idea and supported it with detail from the text. (RL.3-5.2)
"Coke-bottle Brown"
Students read the poem, "Coke-bottle Brown," from Nikki Grimes' poetry book, Meet Danitra Brown. They determined the central idea of the poem selected and supported their answer with evidence from the poem (see picture slideshow below for additional details). (RL.3.2)

The DiversifyUrEd poetry book, Meet Danitra Brown, was integrated into the 3rd grade curriculum during the IB Unit: How We Express Ourselves.
One student used a diorama as the option for their creative artistic expression. Students were assessed on creativity, title selection, connection to the central message of the poem selected and reference to lines from the poem they selected.
The central message was determined. Evidence from the poem was used to support the answer. A diorama of children not paying attention to a bully was used as the creative artistic expression.
The rubric assesses part 1 of the task which includes students selecting a poem, determining the central message and including a supporting detail from the text. The rubric also assesses creativity, title, connection and use of evidence in the chosen creative artistic expression.

Atsila's Adventure in the Cherokee Tribe Project
Students conducted research on various aspects of Native American culture. Students pulled from multiple resources to speak about a Native American tribe from the perspective of a child living in the village. Students also created a diorama of the village (see picture slideshow below for additional details). (W.4.3)

The DiversifyUrEd book, A Native American Thought of It: Amazing Inventions and Innovations, was used as a primary resource. It was integrated into the grade 4 curriculum during the IB Unit: Who We Are.
The diorama portion of this task was assessed on details, a recognizable scene from the tribe's village and additional information gathered from research unique to the tribe. "A Native American Thought of It: Amazing Inventions and Innovations" book was used as a resource to help students gain an accurate depiction of Native American culture.
Students pulled from multiple sources to write a paper from the perspective of a child in a Native American village. The DiversifyUrEd book, A Native American Thought of It: Amazing Inventions and Innovations, was used as a primary resource.
The rubric assessed students on the following categories for the task: research, summary, diorama and grammar.
